During and after a convulsive seizure
- Stay nearby. Clear hazards; move the person only if their position is dangerous.
- Protect their head with something soft and loosen tight neckwear.
- Time the episode. Do not hold them down or put anything in their mouth.
- Once jerking stops, place them on their side and stay until they recover.
- Wait until full recovery before offering food or drink.
With altered awareness or wandering, calmly guide the person away from danger and stay with them. Record what happened for their care team.
Call 999
For a first seizure; one lasting longer than usual or more than five minutes when the usual duration is unknown; repeated seizures without recovery; serious injury; or trouble breathing afterwards. Also seek emergency help if recovery is not as usual.
If breathing is not normal after the seizure, call 999 and follow the call handler’s resuscitation instructions.
