THE JOURNAL · EMMA
When illness is invisible, listening matters.
A reflection on being seen beyond symptoms.
More than an outward impression
A photograph or a brief conversation cannot tell the whole story of someone’s health. A person may need rest, support or time to find words even when they appear well.
A gentler way to help
Ask what would be useful today. Accept a changed plan without demanding proof. Leave room for an honest answer. Practical kindness can be as ordinary as taking notes at an appointment, bringing food or checking in without pressure.
Space to be a person
I want to talk about ordinary things as well as illness. Being supported should leave space for humour, belief, creativity and the life around the appointments.
